The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies
Geneva, Switzerland

invites applications for the position of

DIRECTOR OF THE INSTITUTE

starting on 1 January 2020 or a mutually agreed-upon date.
The appointment is for a period of four years renewable.

Founded in 1927, the Graduate Institute in Geneva is the first academic institution in the world entirely devoted to the study of international affairs and continental Europe’s oldest school of international studies. Its mission is to analyse contemporary global affairs through teaching, research and executive education, and to train in English and French current and future international actors at master’s and doctorate levels.

Providing a tradition of excellence in academic education at the highest levels, offering an environment conducive to critical thinking and focusing on the priority areas of development, trade and investment, democracy, governance, humanitarianism, human rights, migration, refugees, security, environment, health, and gender, the Institute hosts an outstanding, internationally renowned faculty and a devoted professional staff.

The Institute’s location in the heart of International Geneva offers a unique opportunity to interact and exchange with the policy world to the approximately 900 students currently enrolled in its interdisciplinary and disciplinary master and doctoral programmes in international affairs, development sudies, anthropology and sociology, development economics, international economics, international history, international law, and international relations/political science, and to its international community of researchers and fellows as well.

Governed by a foundation board and constituted as a Swiss private law foundation, the Institute is an autonomous research and teaching institution which has strong ties with the Canton of Geneva, the Swiss Federal State and the international community.

The Director is in charge of the academic, administrative and financial management of the Institute, as well as its development. As such, the successful candidate should

  • be an internationally recognised scholar, preferably in an area close to those taught at the Institute, and/or have a deep understanding of the academic world;
  • have senior leadership and management competence and experience, preferably acquired in an academic institution or a high‐level research institution, or have held positions of high responsibility at a national or international level;
  • have experience of working with different stakeholders and in an international context;
  • have demonstrated leadership skills and an entrepreneurial talent; and
  • have an excellent or very good level of French and English.

The selected candidate will be expected to provide academic and administrative leadership to the Institute, promote excellence in all teaching and research as well as foster interdisciplinarity and innovative approaches to learning. The person will engage – together with the Foundation Board – in strategic planning and development activities to expand the Institute’s network nationally and internationally, and successfully meet emerging and accelerating global challenges.

Candidates should apply directly to the Institute, with a letter of motivation and a full curriculum vitae enclosed. Applications should be sent only electronically to directorsearch@graduateinstitute.ch. All applications reviewed by the Search Committee will remain confidential. Candidates selected for the short list will be asked to provide a dossier including the names of three referees and a short paper outlining their views on the strategic development of the Institute. They will then be invited for an interview to be conducted in English in Geneva.

Application deadline: 21 October 2018.
