The Paul Guggenheim Prize in International Law
The Paul Guggenheim Foundation was created in 1979 to honour the memory of Professor Paul Guggenheim. This Prize is awarded every two years to a student whose thesis in public international law is distinguished by its exceptional quality and is the first outstanding work of a young author at the begining of their career.
Launch of the Paul Guggenheim Prize 2017
For the nineteenth time, the Paul Guggenheim Prize, amounting to CHF 15’000, will be awarded to a monograph on an important theme in the field of public international law (except European law). The monograph must be of the highest quality and be the work of a young author at the beginning of his/her career. Works submitted may be in the form of published books or of manuscripts intended for publication; they may be written in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish. Works which have already been awarded a prize of a similar nature will not be considered.
Applicants are requested to send to the Paul Guggenheim Foundation their submission consisting of the following items:
- letter of application
- curriculum vitae
- list of publications
- four copies of the work
Applicants must specify whether the monograph submitted has already been awarded one or several prizes.
The closing date for the reception of submissions is 15 November 2017.

Paul Guggenheim Prize 2016
The Paul Guggenheim Prize 2016 has been attributed ex aequo to :
- Dr Danae Azaria, author of the monograph entitled “Treaties on Transit of Energy via Pipelines and Countermeasures” (Oxford University Press, 2015) and to
- Dr Nina Burri for her work entitled “Bravery or Bravado? The Protection of News Providers in Armed Conflict” (Brill, 2015)

The Arditi Prize in International Relations
In 1993, the Arditi Foundation created the Arditi Prize in International Relations which is awarded to the best master’s dissertation in International Studies or International Affairs.
- Prize-winner 2015: Ms Géraldine Merz
- Dissertation: Memoria Histórica in El Salvador and Beyond : The Exploration of a Dynamic Memoryscape

The Mariano Garcia Rubio Prize
The Garcia Rubio Prize was created in May 2004 to honour the memory of a former assistant in the International Law Department. It is awarded each year to the student who writes the best master’s dissertation in International Law.

- Dissertation: The Lernean Hydra of International Law : An Analysis of Legal Self-Referentiality through the Case Law of the International Court of Justice on Circularity and Paradoxes

The Institute's Alumni Association Prize
This prize was established by the Alumni Association to reward the student from the Institute who prepares the most outstanding PhD thesis. It is awarded every year by each academic unit in turn.

The Pierre du Bois Prize
This prize, created by the Fondation Pierre du Bois pour l'histoire du temps présent, annually rewards the student who prepares the best PhD thesis in International History and Politics presented at the Institute.
